Charlotte Ayles

to spend 24 Hours in a Liferaft

Charlotte Ayles from the Warsash Maritime Academy is preparing to brave the elements and experience what every sailor hopes they NEVER have to do for real - spend 24 hours in a liferaft.

On Friday 21st March a team of students from Warsash Maritime Academy (part of Southampton Solent University), including Charlotte, will clamber into their raft and commence learning at first hand just what it would be like to be cast adrift as their boat sinks behind them. But this challenge is not only a chance to enhance their studies, but a great opportunity to raise funds and awareness for those whose difficult times will last a great deal longer than 24 hours - UK families living with cancer.

Charlotte says:

"I am a 19 year-old Deck Cadet studying at Warsash Maritime Academy, sponsored by Rio Tinto. I heard about the Liferaft Challenge 2014 through the College and I can't wait to take part!! I am fortunate enough to have only experienced a liferaft in short periods as part of safety training and drills, but am eager to complete this daunting but exciting mental and physical challenge. As someone who spent much of their time on the water whilst growing up, I would love to help in providing the opportunity for cancer patients and their families to experience the same enjoyment I gained from sailing. I am hoping to test my practical abilities during this challenge, but most importantly raise enough money through sponsorship to achieve this goal, ensuring lasting memories for families affected by cancer."
