Oliver Mortimer

to spend 24 Hours in a Liferaft

Oliver

Oliver Mortimer from the Warsash Maritime Academy is preparing to brave the elements and experience what every sailor hopes they NEVER have to do for real - spend 24 hours in a liferaft.

On Friday 21st March a team of students from Warsash Maritime Academy (part of Southampton Solent University), including Oliver, will clamber into their raft and commence learning at first hand just what it would be like to be cast adrift as their boat sinks behind them. But this challenge is not only a chance to enhance their studies, but a great opportunity to raise funds and awareness for those whose difficult times will last a great deal longer than 24 hours - UK families living with cancer.

Oliver says:

"Hi, I'm 23, and I've just started a Cadetship to become an Officer of the Merchant Navy.

I have just moved back to England for this Cadetship. I moved out of England when I was 5 to live in France. Since that age, I have been doing various sports, but I am really passionate about rugby. I have been in a rugby club for now 18 years, and I have done everything you can. I have trained a team of young players (5 to 7 years old) and have started a course to become an official referee.

I also love travelling, I spent most of last year going round the world, doing volunteering programs in nearly every country I went to, I taught sports to children in a township just outside Cape Town for 6 weeks, and I taught English to teenagers in Peru for over a month.

As long as I can remember, I have always tried to help people that weren't as fortunate as me, and have participated in charity events. The last one being the London to Brighton bike ride for the British Heart foundation. It was a really good experience; it felt good, helping other people.

And I hope that this experience will be as good as all the ones I had previously!"
